“American Recovery and Reinvestment Act” in Action

PresidentObamaSince Barrack Obama took office in January I had been following his qeues on the stimulus package. Coming out of the holidays the economy did not look any brighter, and I think real concerns of job loss started to hit home. So I watched and listened even more intently to the daily updates and pundits on what they thought was going to be in it, whether we needed it, who was going to fight it etc. We’ll fast forward to Feb. 12, my fears became reality, I was laid off from work. Three days later Feb. 17th a massive (although some think not massive enough) stimulus bill was passed. What this meant, I had no clue. Even when I called the IRS and Dept. of Education, they didn’t know. It was too early.

Well today one of the other people laidoff shot out an email to the group. In it are the details of how part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 is being used to help unemployed Americans. Personally, this helps me out a heck of a lot more than giving anymore money over to AIG! If you are unemployed, or know someone who is recently, please send this information:

On February 17th, President Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (HR 1) to help stimulate the US economy.  A major component of this new law created temporary changes in COBRA and the employer’s obligation under COBRA.  I have spoken with Conexis and they are working feverishly to send out instructions for employers.   They should send you something by next week.  The new policies become effective March 1st and plan employers have until April 17th to notify eligible COBRA beneficiaries of the changes.  At this time I wanted to let you know the latest information about this issue:

1) I have written a short summary of the changes on my blog:
http://www.benefitscafe.com/blog/2009/02/economic-stimulas-and-health-insurance.html

2) The US Department of Labor sets policy for COBRA and their guidance info is here: http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/COBRA.html also, I found the “COBRA Premium Reduction Fact Sheet Helpful.”
http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/newsroom/fsCOBRApremiumreduction.html

3) The IRS has sent out some guidance on how employers recoup the premium that they pay on behalf of eligible COBRA beneficiaries here:
http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=204708,00.html

All of this is happening very quickly and this impacts every company in the US with 20+ employees. DOL and the IRS are trying to figure out what to tell people in order to comply and how to adjust their automated payroll tax collection system.  The COBRA administrative companies (Conexis, Infinisource, etc.) are trying to figure out what to tell their clients. Payroll companies (ADP, Paychex, etc.) are trying to figure out how to change their systems to integrate the credit on the 941 forms.

Social Media That Works? The Obama Administration

Featured

The Obama Campaign was successful in using social media to inform, gain, and mobilize voters. Awhile back I collected a bunch of the ongoing discussions on my delicious. All of it culminating in President Obama being selected “Marketer of the Year” by Ad Age. Well the Obama Campaign Administration has built on that with the new website whitehouse.gov. Here are some ways that the President is using technology unlike any other president before him.

Weekly Radio Address:

Franklin D. Roosevelt’s gave what are known as the “Fireside Chats” in the 1930′s  during the height of the Great Depression. Every president since has taken part in the custom in some form. For the first time, you will be able to access them on YouTube. Much like FDR in the 30′s, President Obama will be using them to discuss his policy decisions during these tough times. I have embedded the first official weekly address. You can visit the Whitehouse YouTube channel here.

The Briefing Room:

The title paragraph reads,The White House provides timely and accurate information about the President’s latest events and public statements.  Here you’ll find photos, video, and blogs, as well as proclamations, executive orders, and press releases.” – whitehouse.gov

In an effort to to create transparency, the President of The United States will post his Executive Orders (five in two days!) and Presidential Memoranda (five in 3 days!) in an easily accessible format. And you can get it in an RSS feed…The Briefing Room and whitehouse.gov

Presidential Inauguration Committee 2009:

The Presidential Inaugural Committee, at the direction of President-elect Obama and Vice President-elect Biden, will organize an inclusive and accessible inauguration that reflects the new Administration’s commitment to leadership that sets aside partisanship and unites the nation around our shared values and ideals.” – pic2009.org

The PIC (Presidential Inauguration Committee) utilized the site to discuss upcoming events (Neighborhood Ball), stream content from the events, and gather donations (to pay for Inauguration activities instead of just taxpayer dollars). The site also posted live feeds of the Youth Ball and the National Prayer Service. They provided text message updates leading up to and during the events. The PIC also has  Flickr, Twitter, Tumblr, and YouTube accounts.

USA Service:

“President Obama believes that we, as Americans, have a responsibility to help our communities and fellow citizens. In summoning a new spirit of service, he is calling on us to make an enduring commitment to our neighborhoods. Sign up today and let’s renew America together.” – usaservice.org

Want to volunteer but don’t know how? You can sign up to find out about volunteer opportunities and events. Visit the site to find out more information, you can find resources, events, and service opportunities. You can also join USAservice.org on facebook.

Transparency and Participation:

President Obama started his career as a community organizer on the South Side of Chicago, where he saw firsthand what people can do when they come together for a common cause. Citizen participation will be a priority for the Administration, and the internet will play an important role in that. One significant addition to WhiteHouse.gov reflects a campaign promise from the President: we will publish all non-emergency legislation to the website for five days, and allow the public to review and comment before the President signs it.”whitehouse.gov

I think this is something extraordinary but I am curious to see how it works. No matter how dry and unreadable ( I am not a lawyer) I am going to try and sink my teeth into at least one of these a week. The tech side of me wonders how the comments are going to combed and moderated. In any case I think the presentation of information like this is vital to making people feel they have a hand in government.

Personally, I think all of this is incredible. Independent of political views, these and other initiatives are a step towards transparency, information organization, and participation. I think that some of these links should be staples on every school computer if not shipped as bookmarks in IE (why does it all have to be product based?).

What do you think about the usage of social media and the web? What do you think about the content, and the organization of content? I will continue to add additional resources/information/programs that I come across or as they are sent to me.

Inauguration 2009 – Washington D.C | Day 4

These are the last of the photos from a great trip. I lost my ID flying into DC, lost my iPhone flying out of DC, and on top of that I stood in one spot for 6 hours freezing and got sick. But none of that could ruin the experience. I just kind of realize that it has been so easy to be negative about so many things. And sometimes it’s easier if you just let it go. (not my iPhone though….I think I might be getting it back!)

I would like to take the time to thank all the people who where appreciative of the live commentary and updates during the event. It was nice to be able to convey my thoughts and emotions during this historic event, and to provide a different lens for people who could not make it. It made the whole experience that much more gratifying.

Thank You

Lasty, while I do not have my iPhone, I have not been able to upload to the FB app. but people are still uploading content. It is a really great cross section of peoples perspectives.

Washington D.C 2009 Inauguration | The Event

All I can say is there was a range of emotions from todays events. Some people followed them live  thru twitter or thru my FB updates (thanks for the encouragment and appreciation). A lot of the the content from the days events can be seen here in this Facebook app.

When I got back, I have to say I was amazed at the diversity of the uploads. Babies at home, Classrooms across the country, home (and warm) tv sets. It is worth a look. I wanted to take the opportunity to post the photos from todays event. My words right now cannot describe the experience. But the person I was with Emily Brewer did a fabulous job of crystalizing some of her thoughts. You can read them here More to come. Tomorrow the Smithsonian and the AeroSpace Museum (hopefully).

Washington D.C 2009 Inauguration

I better make this short, because I have to get up in 4 1/2 hours to get in line to see Barack Obama sworn in! I actually got to see him this morning. He was doing community service a block over from where I am staying (thanks for the hospitality Samantha). I wanted to post pictures from today. I also wanted to give one last plug for the face book app Sapient (that’s me and my developers) have developed!. Tomorrow it will be huge. It will pull in twitter, youTube, sms, and Flickr photos realtime As well as stream the NPR national broadcast of the event. All I have to say is thank you Andy Carvin, NPR, and the Inauguration Report for the opportunity to create something I am proud of. Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell your folks! Check out the app on Facebook:
